Experience and Perception

Here’s an interesting question.  What is the difference between a ship and a boat?  A ship is the bigger of the two vessels.  But… who determines this?  Well…  the ship does (hehehe).  All kidding aside, the larger of the two vessels has the right away.  This general rule is based on perception which you would think could cause problems; however it really seems to work.

Perception is defined as, “a way of regarding, understanding, or interpreting something.”

So how do you better your understanding in any area?  You have to gain more experience at it. One of my favorite examples of this would be from a great friend of mine years ago.  He would have maybe three things on his “To Do” list.  Now, if you asked him how his day was, he would tell you, “I am completely swamped!”  I would just shake my head because I had ten million things on my list and thought he didn’t know what “swamped” was.  It took me a number of years maturing to later realize that what I saw on his calendar was more than just three things.  He knew based on his experience that those three items were not tasks…  they were PROJECTS!  They had multiple steps that were involved and would take hours on that given day to complete.

Acknowledging this is the first move towards creating a stronger plan and bring your thoughts, hopes and wants to reality.  Like the ship and the boat and my friend’s list compared to mine; you have to have the experience to understand how to perceive whether what you wrote down is just a simple task, or a spider web of multiple steps to get to the desired result.

Ultimately the only way to learn this is to keep doing it over and over again.  The more you work this process, the more experience you will earn in doing it.

So… Experience + Understanding = Perception

Time to go get some more experience!
