Improvised Weapons

In Filipino Martial Arts (FMA / Kali / Eskima /Arnis) there is a concept called “One-Upsion.” This is the old thought process of “One Up-ing” your opponent with a better weapon.  In this case the better weapon translates to you controlling distance.  Here are some examples in FMA.

  • In an unarmed attack, you want to have a knife.

  • If they have a knife, you want two knives.

  • If they have two knives, you want a stick.

  • If they have a stick, you want a stick and knife.

  • If they have a stick and knife, you want a stick and shield.

  • If they have a stick and shield, you want two sticks.

  • If they have two sticks, you want a spear.

  • If they have a spear, you want a bow and arrow.

  • If they have a bow and arrow, you want a hand gun.

This paints a massive picture to help us understand that distance, speed, and even strength can be controlled through the use of “One Uping” your assailant.  In many cases we can’t walk down the street with a stick and shield unless we are headed to the Renaissance Festival, therefore we must improvise.

To improvise means we need “to make, provide, or arrange from whatever materials are readily available.”  So, lets try an experiment.  Using the “Three Foot Rule,” take a look around you and inventory everything that you can reach quickly.  Write every item down and then think about how each one could be used for self-defense.  This is the basis and guide behind our Improvised Weapons Curriculum.

Our goal is to teach you how to turn everyday objects into “weaponized” tools that you can find around your home, office, or on your person in order to defend yourself.

We are excited to announce that for the first time outside of national organizations, we will be teaching this fun and effective curriculum.  If you are interested in learning more about Improvised Weapons, Knife Defense and/or Self-Defense you should join us Saturday, February 8th from 3pm-6pm at Lache Movement.  You can register by clicking HERE.

In the meantime, start making your “Three Foot List” and see what you can come up with for your own Improvised Weapons.  Also check out our Knife Defense Curriculum and Self-Defense Curriculum online for more insight in these areas.
