I Will Survive

Music is so powerful and influences us so many ways.  It can conjure up memories from our past, control our feelings, and even inspire us to create.

One of my personal favorites is when it feels like a song is speaking directly to us.  You know that moment when a song’s lyrics touch your soul?  It feels as if the song was written for you.

Music can be timeless and often its lyrics offer a glimpse into the artist’s life.  If we listen closely, they give us a chance to understand more.  Several lyrics from Gloria Gaynor’s ”I Will Survive" have been really speaking to me during this unprecedented event.

She sings,

“At first I was afraid, I was petrified”

Our fear continues to grow with everything from contracting the virus to dying from it.  We fear giving it to our loved ones or someone else.  We fear the unknown amount of time that we will be without face to face contact with our friends and distant family.  We fear the economic squeeze on ourselves and others in the world.  We fear the discomfort of change and most importantly, we fear the unknown.

What we must remember is that we have conquered many of these fears before.  We’ve made friends with some of our fears and as Ms. Gaynor expresses,

“And I grew strong
And I learned how to get along
And so you're back
From outer space
I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face
I should have changed that stupid lock, I should have made you leave your key
If I'd known for just one second you'd be back to bother me”

You see fear is like a “Frenemy.”  It is both your friend and also your enemy.  Often enough fear can imprison you or lift you up.  It can make you freeze or it can make you take a leap.  As you grow to know fear more like a friend you can lean on it.  You can do amazing things with it.  You can grow from it.

The problem comes when our best of friend starts to shift.  When fear begins to turn to worry, insecurity, jealousy or even depression.  This version of fear is the abusive and ugly side of our friend.  It is the enemy and it is what we must lock the door on to safe guard ourselves.

Gloria Gaynor teaches us to stand tall as we tell our fear to,

“Go on now, go, walk out the door
Just turn around now
'Cause you're not welcome anymore”

She continues with her powerful chorus,

“Do you think I'd crumble
Did you think I'd lay down and die?
Oh no, not I, I will survive
Oh, as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive
I've got all my life to live
And I've got all my love to give and I'll survive
I will survive”

We are all strong.  It isn’t time to lay down.  We have so much more to give and so much more to do.  Now more than ever the world needs your positive thoughts, energy and love.  Push forward by asking yourself what can I do for someone today?  Make a list of everything you have to offer.  Then search for others to digitally link arms with and help others learn that they can survive too.

Lock the door on your enemy fear.  Stand in the window and wave hi and goodbye all at the same time.  Then sing, “I will survive.”
