Surviving to Thriving

It is extremely easy to get into a mindset where we are always putting out fires.  Just as we solve one problem, another one appears to need our attention.  This can be a vicious cycle which puts us into “Survival Mode.”

So how do we break this loop of fire fighting?  We stop juggling.  We let all the balls hit the floor.  We end the struggle by exiting the room.  We hit the reset button on the game.

Don’t get me wrong we can’t let everything burn down around us; but we must seek solid ground to stand on.  We need to be able to breath and see clearly.  When we detach and take a step back we have a clearer mind and we are able to make better choices.  We take reaction out of the equation because distance equals time.  If we give ourselves some distance, we can have all the time we need to make a better choice.  This helps us find the domino that is causing the chain reaction.  It gives us the opportunity to make a change.

The recent social quarantine has people feeling all sorts of different emotions.  Some are stressed due to the economic squeeze that is happening all around the United States.  Others are taking this time to give attention to unfinished projects.  They are doing things they said they would always do if they had more time.  Many are taking an inventory on what is important and others are reflecting on what they really want for their lives.

Personally, I am aiming to finish another book in record time.  I have signed up for online classes and I am also teaching myself two new computer programs to help me with my projects.

This time should be used wisely.  It should allow us to take a step back and adjust our mindset.  Take this time as a chance to go from surviving to thriving.  Expand your vision.  Set new goals.  Get new expectations.  Learn new skills.  Take on new challenges.

As Bruce Lee the creator of Jeet Kune Do said,

“Ever since I was a child I have had this instinctive urge for expansion and growth. To me, the function and duty of a quality human being is the sincere and honest development of one’s potential.”
