Or Else

If we look back across our lives to date, we have all probably experienced a moment of “do this, or face the consequences.” It is a bit “old school” and often frowned on these days as a negative way to reinforce habits, but it does offer us a way to balance ourselves and achieve everything we have ever wanted.

As adults, many of us ricochet between giving ourselves undeserving rewards, justifying why something is the way it is, or feeling guilty for doing something we should have or should not have done. We can triumphantly break free of this revolving prison sentence by setting clear expectations for what we should do. As adults, there is no one here to ground or reprimand us; therefore, we have to be parental guardians to ourselves.

Instilling Remedial Discipline in our lives will bring us extreme gains, but like everything, it has a dichotomy. This razor-sharp, double-edge sword is something we must use with care. On one side, we need the repercussions and the other, rewards. If we make a list, we can balance these two so that the carrots we dangle in front of ourselves as a reward will make us work equally as hard, like the thought of what we will have to endure if we don’t. If we take our list of “or else’s” a step further to reprimand ourselves for not doing what we are supposed to do on a daily or even weekly basis, we will stay on track for the long haul.

As Jocko Willink says, “Discipline Equals Freedom,” and freedom happens when we commit to our path.

When you do the things you need to do, when you ought to do them, the day will come when you can do the things you want to do when you want to do them.
