We all hit moments of fatigue, stress, or even pain. These aren’t moments of weakness. These are small tests to show us what we need to develop more on with ourselves. These challenges could be as simple as hitting our toes on the bed or as complex as an injury that challenges our ability to train the way we think we should in our minds. No matter the size of this struggle, it can cause us to develop anger. It could be as simple as a curse word or as nuclear as a sledgehammer to that bed we hit our toe on. These moments offer us a chance to think about our course and the example we set for others. It’s when we must ease our frustration with four simple words.
“I Am In Control.”
Giving in to the “dark side,” so to speak, and lashing out with anger can develop from many things. It could be a lack of exercise, diet, or even any number of stressors from home to work. It can even stem from the insecurity we have with ourselves. If we aren’t happy with who we are and what direction we are going, we tend to let those inward feelings become an outward level of anger. Much of this stems from when we feel out of control.
We cannot always control what happens around us, but we can control who we are and how we act, which leads to managing more of our surroundings. Therefore, if we concern ourselves more with improving who we are, we can neutralize all of the above triggers and issues so that the only moments of stress we face are planned and self-imposed. So how do we do that? We get after it. We chase control in ourselves and in all that we do.
Taking control of ourselves is as simple as focusing on the Triangle of Improvement and developing a stronger mind, body, and spirit. You might already be paying attention to some of these areas, but most people have deficiencies in one, if not more. The trick is figuring out which one you should start developing to trigger the excitement and enthusiasm that will build momentum and bleed over into the others.
In my opinion, physically getting after it always works. After a few days of training, you start to get hungry for more. Your diet will indirectly change because your body will crave the fuel it needs to either prepare or repair for your training sessions. As you progress, you will see improvement over the next couple of weeks, which will prompt you to ask yourself, “What more can I do?” With this mindset, you will create a cascading effect that fuels you to develop a better you. Most importantly, your spirit and overall attitude will grow in such a positive way that pessimistic situations will bounce off you like bullets do when fired at Superman.
So remember, you are in control. All you have to do is remind yourself by saying the phrase, “I am in control.”
