WORKSHOP: Developing Striking Speed & Power (REVIEW)
Larry St Clair
Our first of 12 in the 2023 Workshop Program started this year with a big bang! The goal was to help each individual become faster and stronger with their striking ability. It was a packed house with attendees at all levels, from participants that had never tried martial arts to seasoned Black Belts. Everyone brought their heart, fire, and desire to grow; and came prepared to sweat.
The Workshop started slow and smooth with a stretching warm-up to save energy for a much greater pace later. As time progressed, the participants spent the first hour building a template that moved back and forth between small ways to enhance what natural attributes they had and how to exercise those they needed to build up.
The instructors did a perfect job of breaking down each of the foundation strikes taught on Focus Mitts and Thai Pads so that everyone attending could see and hear the difference that every step in the template was making in their abilities. Participants then joined on Punching Bags and spent a few minutes working through the repetition of adjusting each motion while the instructors would come by with extra one-on-one guidance. One of the most amazing experiences was to see how the planned template and formula applied to not just one strike but almost every single strike they could execute.
The instructors led participants during the bonus hour; through a series of rhythm and intensity drills with combinations. These taught everyone how to take what they had developed in what is known as Bruce Lee’s system of Jeet Kune Do (JKD) as one motion or Single Direct Attack (SDA) into more elaborate Attack By Combination (ABC) formats. These ABCs started with hand combinations where each individual could alternate speed and power, which eventually built into an additional series of kick and punch sets. Utilizing the first hour’s template, participants could see firsthand how they could continue to grow, working simple adjustments by flexing different muscles, changing their elevation, and more.
After two hours of sweaty action, all attendees felt they had enhanced their speed and power, which grew their confidence in their self-protection. Best of all, everyone left with a template they could keep practicing to increase results in every training session for the years to come.
