We have been sharing knowledge on edge weapons, disarms, empty-hand self-defense, improvised and flexible weapons, and our most recent Ground Zero curriculum at the National Conference for A Girl and A Gun (AGAG) for over five years. Just a few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of working with multiple women from our area at our location on our Ground Zero curriculum. The women are always a pleasure to work with because they bring hungry minds, open hearts, and no ego to their training.
Our Ground Zero curriculum provides students with tools to escape from underneath an opponent that is on top of them, holding them down, striking them, or even trying to deploy a weapon. At the National Conference, there are one-and-a-half-hour blocks to introduce material, but this workshop gave us a chance to dive in deeper and get a lot of repetition with three and a half hours of training. The students started by warming up with essential body mechanics that would give them homework to continue practicing with or without a partner after the workshop. This format always brings out a “Miyagi Moment” when students learn that all the warm-up drills are used in the curriculum to survive and escape in these scenarios.
As time progressed in the workshop, we were able to hone in on specific questions and “what if” situations during partner exchanges. Q&A time is essential to help students think through problems and grow from reaction to action in every scenario. The entire group had a chance to take this to a higher level near the end of their training by escaping from under the coaches. This pressure brought out critical learning to help students solve problems while coaches and classmates offered verbal assistance.
