The Mindset Shift: Turning Your Weekend Fun into Weeklong Success
Many people live for the weekend. They seek out fun and exciting opportunities to break up the normal routine of the boring work week and cut loose to enjoy life. What if that was the difference in you achieving everything you ever wanted? Now, no one wants to work seven days a week, so how do we balance work and play to enjoy life? How do we retrain our focus to not live for just the weekend but the whole seven-day week?
The answer is simple. We adopt a growth mindset that allows us to flip everything upside down, making our weekend of fun work, and our work will become a vacation from this new norm each week.
They say the top 2% work every single day. Even on the holidays, they will still log in and check on everything for a few minutes. This action keeps them sharp, aware, and hungry. My wife Sonja and I spend a lot of time working on the weekend by setting up a series of events and goals for the year, which places us nearly every weekend, chiseling at ways to train, grow, and strengthen our skills. From Ultra Marathon Canoe Racing, Ruck Challenges, and even Adventure Racing, we have to stay on top of our skills for each area and continue to develop our mind, body, and spirit for what the event ahead of us may involve.
I’ll be honest. Sometimes, it doesn’t feel like we have a weekend for at least the first six months of the year due to all the training we are overlapping, but we always find a few hours here and there to do something together with our family and even our friends. You know what the best part is? When we do that, we are 100% present with those around us, which refreshes and recharges us for more the following day.
Take a moment to think of a few larger goals that you would like to achieve. Break them into smaller goals and actionable steps you can set your sights on. Then, schedule these items and tasks on a calendar to get them done. Don’t be afraid to carry these things into the weekend. When you do, your weekend will feel like you are having fun at your “new” job, crushing goals, while the longer part of the week will feel like a “weekend” from your lengthy training intervals, tasks, and steps needed to achieve your objectives.
As you achieve each of your small steps and grow your confidence in this method, you will find that your two or three days of crushing goals will bleed over into the four, five, and even seven days. On physical rest days, you will start researching and mentally building your game plan for the next interval, where you can try new things to better yourself and enhance the speed at which you ascend to the top of your goals list.
