Navigating the Pain Room: How to Embrace Challenges

Over the years of sharing, teaching, leading, and mentoring in the martial arts and fitness industry, many people have entered and exited through our doors at Martial Way Legacy. The goals vary from youth to adult students; however, the primary focus of every student is always to get better at something. Whether it be fitness or self-defense, every student, directly or indirectly, learns how discipline, consistency, and effort will help them reach their goals through challenges.
Overall, every single person on the face of the planet hits some rough swells while traveling the ocean to reach larger goals. During this process, we typically question our life choices and ask ourselves what we were thinking while pursuing our goals. These moments can lead to doubt and plenty of second-guessing as to what we are doing, which ultimately can cast a large shadow on our efforts, slowing us down and possibly even creating a notion that it might be better if we don't experience this pain point we are going through.
"Not dead, can't quit." Richard Machowicz
The "Pain Room," as our coach Phil describes it, is a significant place. It typically bakes a large, hot, humble pie for us to chow down on. It brings our weaknesses into visibility and teaches us humility in many ways. This experience is essential in every accomplishment we seek and is located at the heart of all developments, helping us learn how to push through struggles and keep going.
This pain point is the element that either makes us or breaks us. Our goals can be directly in front of us. However, the pain of stretching to reach them will often hold us back and even make us quit. Fear and pain work hand in hand and have a great deal to do with whether we reach our goals because courage and what older generations call "thick skin" is not something we are born with. We gain virtues through goal setting, goal achievement, and goal leaping.
Typically, two types of individuals show up when they experience a challenge. Some come to a false revelation that this activity isn't for them, and some come to a critical awakening: They must get better to complete, compete, or grow beyond the suffering needed to reach new levels.
Life guarantees us all struggles. As soon as we accept it, we can move forward. When we do, we must understand that we will need assistance. We must be there for each other and the youth of our next generation, who will carve a better path for our world. Our dedication and time to this journey, whether our own, a peer's, or our children's, is the most critical exchange between human beings. It is the glue to our motivation and the spear that cuts through our growing pains and strains. As we stay focused, seek help, and assist others, "a rising tide lifts all boats."
