The "To Do or Not To Do" Battle

Some days just aren’t sunny.  Some days are dark, wet and cold.  On these days we don’t feel like doing what we should do.  We don’t care what we eat or whether we workout.  We just aren’t “feeling it.”

This is the battle of “To Do or Not To Do” and it happens to all of us.  This battle will try to extinguish the flame of your Desires.  As your fire starts to dim down so will your Dedication.  That is when our Discipline has to be strong.  It is our life line and the only thing that can save us from the destruction of our Triple D and a potential downward spiral.

As of right now my feet are feeling amazing after my second PRP Treatment at the Center For Healing and Regenerative Medicine.  I can’t believe how much better I am feeling from morning to night.  I am back to running again, executing round after round of footwork and more.  Of course as I solve one problem I find a knot in my shoulder as well as my  tricep, and my knee is swollen.  The knee started late on a Friday after a killer week of training.  The shoulder started the following Monday and the tricep that Tuesday.

Guess what I did on Wednesday?  I trained, and boy did I train hard!  I worked around the strains.  I warmed up more.  I did exercises to help the areas.  I added more stretching, more foam rolling and more trigger point routines.  I drank more water and I got better sleep.

My point is we are NEVER 100%.  This is something my Instructor Ron Balicki used to coach me on when I was competing a lot.  I would have a strained knee, foot, or wrist and be concerned about my performance in the event.  He told me, “You will never be 100%.”  He was right.  I honestly can’t think of a single match where my body was 100%.  Did that stop me from competing?  Definitely not!  Through experiencing this multiple times I found out that it didn’t matter if I was 100%.  All that mattered was that I gave 100%.

So try overcoming these challenging days by reminding yourself that you are, “Doing what I can with what I got.” (Burt Gumer said in Tremors)

This works because your gains are not built through the sunny days where you have tons of energy and feel like you can climb Everest.  Your largest growing points are when you are stretched, challenged and tested.  This is when you must be like Dori and just keep swimming.  Remind yourself that, "If you keep doing what you can, eventually you can do more.” Jocko
