Laughing Over Split Smoothie

Everyone’s journey will have it’s fair share of bumps and bruises if you are truly getting after it.  As one of my students back in the day would say, “I didn’t pick this as a safe alternative to needle crocheting.”  That means we have to accept the terrain of our journey.  We must embrace the challenging days and “take our lumps.”  When we do, we will find our greatest strength.

Most days I make a healthy smoothie in the afternoon for my daughters.  The other day I was running a little behind and as I was putting the top on the bottle it slipped out of my hands.  I was scared to death if it hit the floor it would pop open.  I frantically leaned in with my legs so that I could catch it between myself and the counter.  Wheeeewww!  That was a close one.  Then I noticed the pop top was slightly OPEN!  It started to tilt and pour down my pant leg and onto the cabinet.  Just when it couldn’t get any worse, the bottle fell into the cabinet area and began leaking out all over the inside.  ACK!  I am pretty sure I found some adult language to chant as I quickly grabbed the bottle to stop it from leaking all of its contents.  So now I need to clean up the mess and change my pants which is going to make me officially late. UGH!!!

I am sharing this with you because I almost found myself getting upset.  I almost allowed this whole scenario to ruin the rest of my day.  Then I thought about what would have been worse.  The bottle could have fallen upside down and lost all of the tasty smoothie everywhere in the cabinet… but it didn’t.  This silver lining put a smile on my face and actually made me laugh.  The rest of the afternoon and evening was honestly amazing.  I turned it around.  I became my own Weatherman again and controlled the outcome.

The moral of this story is that there will always be days filled with irritating situations, tall speed bumps, and even possible pitfalls.  Accept it.

“Know the difference between a catastrophe and an inconvenience.  To realize that it’s just an inconvenience, that it is not a catastrophe, but just an unpleasantness, is part of coming into your own, part of waking up.”  Bruce Lee the Founder of Jeet Kune Do (JKD)

As you wake up to this part of your journey, remember to “Never allow bad news to be an excuse to stop seeking success in life…”  (Nigel Cumberland)

As one of my friends would said, “Excuses don’t excuse.”

There is truly no reason we can’t overcome what is happening to us.  All you have to do is not let your current circumstances or situation define you.  It isn’t who you are.  It is just your process of waking up!

Now open your eyes and see the silver lining in every situation.  It won’t always be obvious at first; but if you stare long enough you will find it.
