The First Legacy Workshop (REVIEW)

Here at our academy we spend time on two learning formats.  The first is the Legacy Curriculum from our instructors Dan Inosanto and Ron Balicki.  The second is our Rotating Curriculum where we bring elements from each individual art together to help flesh out your potential.

A topic that has been on our list for a while is to offer more opportunities to saturate the Legacy Curriculum.  This would allow us to honor and share specific training material that has been handed down from Bruce Lee to our instructors.  It would also create a goal that would give birth to our first four hour Legacy Workshop!

The outline for this format  was to devote an hour to each specific art.  These would  include arts we host here at Marital Way Legacy such as:

Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do (JKD)

Muay Thai

Savate

Silat

Shooto

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Filipino Martial Arts (FMA - Kali, Eskrima, Arnis)

For the first Legacy Workshop we chose JKD, Muay Thai, Silat and FMA.  This helped us cover the footwork and counters of JKD, along with the solid striking of Muay Thai.  It also gave us the  mobility and ground fighting of Silat and the knife disarms of FMA.

We accomplished this with an ensemble of instructors and STORM Team members from our school.  This gave us a chance to learn from so many different people including Guro Larry, Black Belts Vlad and Dyana, as well as coach Brandyn and STORM Team members Alex and Amy.

“It was fun to see Vlad, Dyana, and everybody else teach something.”  Amy

“The instruction was clear, thank you to all the instructors.  It was great!”  Richa

Vlad, Dyana and Brandyn opened up with a great workout using ten different Muay Thai Four Counts, three Six Counts and a classic 18 Count.  Alex took us deep into JKD’s 24 different Non Classical Footwork Drills and then Guro Larry went Intermediate to Advanced and covered eight JKD’s Juk Tek (Side Kick) Counters.  Then he transitioned into Harimau Silat with ten different Mother Earth Mobility Drills and three different sets of Kicking Combinations from the floor.  Amy finished up the workshop teaching twelve  Langit (fencing grip) Knife Disarms; while Guro Larry showcased a new way to practice them when you don’t have a partner.

“I have not been able to train like this in a while.  My favorite part was getting to that point where you’ve gotten to mental exhaustion.  You just cannot absorb anymore information.  That lets me know it was a great day of training.  Just the shear volume and going through all of this today was my favorite.”  Joe

Originally this workshop was scheduled to be on site at our facility which is located at 1812 Payton Gin, Suite 210 in Austin, Texas. Unfortunately we were unable to host it there due to the pandemic.  So we did the next best thing and set up a special Zoom call so our students in Austin, Houston, Tyler, Los Angeles and even New York could all still be present.

“I liked doing the Zoom format.”  Amy

The Legacy Workshop was created as a free event for enrolled students at Martial Way Legacy.  Taking the pandemic into consideration, we opened up the Zoom call to anyone who was interested.  This increased attendance and actually brought in training partners from Mexico, Uruguay and even Chile!

“I am grateful for allowing me to participate and work with you in this wonderful class.”  Bernardo from Chile

This linked arms across multiple countries which was amazing.  The Legacy Workshops are set for once every three months; however there are talks of us offering these a little sooner to keep everyone on track while they are at home.  Stay tuned…
