Trash To Treasure

Occasionally we read or hear something that strums through the guitar strings of our soul.  It resonates with us in such a powerful manner that we feel compelled to write it down or even take a picture of it.

Personally I enjoy reading from multiple books at once.  This keeps me interested in reading and allows me to learn about multiple topics.  These books usually range from many subjects including Martial Arts, Personal Development, Leadership, Business, and more.

One enjoyment I have while reading is to try and “connect the dots” between these books.  I look for common threads in an effort to find the “Laws of Attraction” that bind them together.  In doing so, I pull quotes from each book and write them in my journal.  Often, these quotes speak to me and even relate to each other. However, when they don’t, I still write them down with the hope that I can apply their words at a later date.

One day, I had a breakthrough that was like a lightning strike to the head as a student shared with me a problem they faced.  At that very moment, I realized that I had more than just an ear for them.  My shoulder wasn’t the only thing I could share.  Our hug would not be the only comfort.  I figured out the quotes that didn’t seem to fit in my puzzle, weren’t meant for me after all. They were for others, and my job was to share them when they were most needed.

As I read a specific quote to my troubled student, it was like a tidal wave of relief had just washed over their soul.  Their eyebrows, chin, posture, and even demeanor completely changed.  Whatever burden they were feeling had been removed.

Reflecting on that scenario, I was shown a new meaning to, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” I had always thought of the unwanted items you throw away; but, on this day, I realized that it also included quotes and thoughts, as well as experiences. Now with a tight fist, I hang onto even the most obscure quotes and save them for a later date in hopes of sharing with someone in need.

I can tell you that I have had this experience countless times now, and each time I am reminded of so much.  The blessings I have been granted and the life lessons I have learned; have illuminated my path and the paths of others.

Apply this the next time you consider tossing an experience in the trash.  Even your darkest day might be the light that someone else requires.  Let yourself become the transporter of wisdom from all you have seen and heard.  Sharing is caring, and as Bruce Lee said, “Real living is living for others.”
