BLACK BELT TRAINING ADVICE: Make It A Game.

Recently we’ve been hosting interviews with founding members, long term students, and even Black Belts to preserve and share our Legacy.

Last Friday, our double Black Belt Jamie Smith; reminded me of something essential when it comes to our progress and future training.  Her generation bonded together to advance through multiple classes and ranks using a vital strategy that can help us all.  What made them so successful and helped them train for many years in multiple arts?  They created a game around their goals.

We’ve used this format for years in classes and even as the main feature in our online Self-Defense Curriculum.  In this video, you will see two examples of how to escape from someone grabbing your wrist.  If we assemble both of these into one drill, we can play what we call “The Game.”  Following this format allows us to develop our response time, create endless scenarios, and still have plenty of room for advancement.  Essentially this means, as we grow, so does “The Game,” which makes training exciting and fun.

I enjoy applying this format in almost everything I do.  I keep track of my numbers on anything I accomplish so that I can see the results of my effort, as well as plot my future goals.  It allows me to stay on top of “my game” in smaller increments of time by focusing on certain micro-ed areas of application.

You can use “The Game” to help you learn a new technique, push harder in a training session, or even stimulate discipline to add more training days to your schedule.  Set anything as your goal and create a prize for your actions and results.  Following this principle will help you become as Tony Robbins says, “fascinated with your frustration,” which in turn, will help you stay sharp, conquer your fears, overcome boredom and even fight burnout.
