Our mission statement here at Martial Way Legacy is similar to an ethos with the hope to shine a light on our path. It includes our goals and benefits for new students, as well as show our history and evolution.
An ethos best describes the character, spirit, or culture of a community.
Our ethos or complete mission statement reads,
“As a compass to the preservation of Bruce Lee’s philosophy and legacy, our primary goal is to produce champions in life as well as in martial arts. Since 1996, we have offered creative instruction and organized curriculum for both children and adults in Austin, Texas. Students of all ages have a chance to participate in private, semi-private, and group training. The objective of each lesson is to develop and achieve goals, which continues to enrich lives and shape memories for a lifetime.”
The first sentence describes everything about us, including our mindset and methods. Every day we rise and walk a path to make ourselves better than the previous day. This path includes the balance of freedom from all doctrines, while also solidifying an approach rooted in discipline. We work hard here at Martial Way Legacy to preserve these and more of Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do or JKD philosophies and legacy, while not holding onto them as the gospel truth. We offer a way to give guidance without manipulating the direction of your personal growth. We stay true to the systems and many different drills that have been handed down to us, while also looking for topics and themes to help you explore your potential. All of this helps us reach what Bruce Lee referred to as Primary Freedom.
“In primary freedom, one utilizes all ways and is bound by none…” Bruce Lee
Our instructors wish to share with you the arts bestowed to us, as well as the benefits from experiences we have learned. We balance this collection of knowledge and experience delicately between what Lee describes in Enter the Dragon as “a finger pointing to the moon” and “the heavenly glory.” Lee was a true pioneer to more than just the martial arts world. He created a wave of thinking that has left an impression on everything from relationships, self-improvement, and of course, how to fight. We work hard here at our academy to preserve his mindset through the teachings of our instructors. Accomplishing this is not always as easy as you would think. It requires our instructors to stay focused on their personal goals, while also taking a back seat for their students.
Since 1996, we have spent the last 24 years helping our students of all ages reach their goals with both creative instruction, as well as an organized curriculum that emphasizes application. We feel it is imperative to know both where you are and where you are going. One of the best ways to do this is with a measuring stick, and in martial arts, the two best ways to indicate our advancement are both in what we know and what we can do. That translates into using terminology, remembering sets of techniques, and pushing yourself beyond what you think you can accomplish.
Step by step, we establish this in a safe, learning environment with a team mentality. Students at all levels experience a symbiotic relationship with the opportunity to train together. This pedagogy helps advanced students recall information, work on mentorship, and welcome newer students to the family while offering amazing layers of guidance. Students experience this synergy and teamwork in our semi-private lessons as well as workshops. Another unique place this happens is in our private lessons. Often enough, the next student will arrive early, or the current lesson will stay over longer. During this transition phase, each person will help the other train towards their goals. This concept emanates from the last sentence in our ethos which states,
“The objective of each lesson is to develop and achieve goals, which continues to enrich lives and shape memories for a lifetime.”
Numbers don’t lie, and we are proud to say we have students that have been with us as long as 18 years. They love training and helping each other work towards their goals. When someone leaves to another city or state, we encourage them to continue with their training; but always hear back from how there is no place like Martial Way Legacy. The welcoming atmosphere and positive encouragement are second to none. This impression is cast from the school’s ethos or mission and isn’t just carried out by the instructors. It is set into motion by each student and paid forward in every class. The only way to know this is to experience it for yourself. We do not doubt that once you do, you will understand why so many of us consider Martial Way Legacy home.
