These last four months have been a whirlwind of constant changes.  Everyone from parents, children, teachers, and professionals have had to learn to adapt, improvise, and overcome many issues.

Here at Martial Way Legacy, we have seen proof as to just how adaptive our youth can be.  They have embraced the change and continued to persevere.

This proof has given us the fuel to create something that all children with internet access could enjoy.  We aimed high, by producing a week-long virtual training camp, and best of all, we offered it for free to everyone.

Now, we are no strangers to writing lesson plans, filming, and editing footage, but this idea would require us to learn a new interface, while also getting three different programs to talk to each other.  It took us a little bit of time, but we launched our first-ever Virtual Kids Camp over a month ago, and it was awesome!

One of the best things about attending a virtual camp is that it can be done at any point of the day and anywhere you have internet service. Each day the children would log in and start with a section on Character Development, warm up, and participate in a previously filmed class. We included base material as well as curriculum after Black Belt to keep all ages and levels challenged. We took techniques and drills from two main themes, which included various kicking techniques from Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do, as well as a self-defense series where the children would defend themselves from the ground and try to get up.  This foundation would give us a chance to take the afternoon Zoom Class to new levels with more interaction, quality control, as well as teach the children lessons on choreography, mentorship, and leadership. During these sessions, we would warm up the children with our very own superhero themed, conditioning game which was a hit.  Then we would review the material of the day to make sure everyone was up for learning more on how to be a mentor and a leader through creative choreography.  Our goal with this format was to have each child step up and lead the class with the combinations they created.  As each day progressed, and their confidence grew, we would see them build up past two move combinations in preparation for their graduation! As a bonus, on day five, if they emailed their combinations to us, we would send their parents a graduation certificate via email to award their child.

After five days of hosting this format, there was no doubt in our minds that this was one of the best projects we have had the opportunity to create. Hosting a virtual camp was something that our next generation needed. Best of all, having an interactive section for them to participate in was the cherry on top. We are currently using all of this excitement to bring life to our second Free Marital Arts Camp, which will build from where we left off and challenge our youth in all-new ways.
