What is Discipline?

Discipline isn’t something we are issued when we enter this world.  It is something we earn through guidance, structure, and hard work. It is often defined as an activity, exercise, or a regimen that develops or improves a characteristic, skill, or attribute.

“…without Discipline, learning cannot occur.” Sang H. Kim

The greatest challenge we all face when visualizing our journey to achieve discipline is that we think of it as a journey. We view it as a pinnacle like earning a Black Belt in martial arts or even cresting Mount Everest. This mental concept makes discipline look like an open ocean without anything insight, which can cause us to stop before we even start. In cultivating discipline, we must realize that it isn’t a destination or diploma that we would hang on our wall. It is an ongoing process that we must embrace and endure. It takes all of our energy and focus to both create discipline and also keep it alive and running strong.

Daily discipline is a revolution that we must wage internally and externally to develop our true potential. It is something that can drain all of our energy and time to create momentum to achieve, but like a candle can be extinguished with the most subtle of breezes. Wait, so we are going to put all this effort and all this time into working to achieve something that isn’t tangible? We are going to bust our butts trying to obtain something that can’t be grasped and yet, can also disappear like water in our hands? Why bother even trying, right? The answer is simple.

"Self respect grows directly from discipline" George S. Patton

When we choose to be more disciplined, we take action to be better than we are, which shows our inner desires and hunger to do more and be more.  It’s the most powerful step to getting started; however, we are still starring at a daunting, ongoing, and extensive campaign with many moving parts. So how do we even plan to get started? The same way we can eat an elephant, one bite at a time.

Discipline as a whole can be obtained, achieved, and even maintained if we break it down into small slivers or miniature accomplishments. These can be tasks, progress checks, virtues, or even pillars that will be our foundation to everything we will achieve. Identical to dominos, we can line each one of these up to paint a picture of our direction, and ultimately our success. Identifying these dominos and keeping them consistent in our lives will be the key to our success in everything we do.
