If you follow Bruce Lee or other great martial artists who have appeared on the silver screen, you might have seen a Mook Jong or Wooden Dummy in the background or even being used. It is a tool that Wing Chun and many Jeet Kune Do, or JKD practitioners have used for years to unlock specialized training and combative concepts.
Whether you practice specific forms, free flow, or research trapping on the Wooden Dummy, you gain a better understanding of simultaneous blocking and hitting, centerline control, and an extremely enhanced tactile sensitivity. These are winning concepts and attributes that can crossover to every martial art style and even other sports.
The two goals of this workshop were to introduce Wooden Dummy training from both the Jun Fan and JKD Sets, as well as translate them into trapping, where we would apply the material to immobilize an opponent. To enhance this process with quality and help everyone feel safe during the pandemic, we opened this workshop to only ten people for in-person training. All other attendees were welcome to join in virtually on Zoom. All the Sets and drills taught were based on a concept of “No Dummy - No Problem,” so that even participants at home could train without a Dummy. We took it a step further for our “in-person” students by arranging ten Dummies so that each person would have their own and could saturate their learning process over the three hours. As the final hour came to an end, we found ourselves knee deep in the last Set without time to finish it. We asked everyone if they wanted to stay, and with them on board, we spent the fourth hour finishing the Set!
This Wooden Dummy Workshop was our third to host and featured our online Wooden Dummy Specialized Certification Program. We’ve kept enrollment in this program limited and opened it only in phases to guarantee a high level of quality for its participants. This workshop marked the relaunch of a new and improved learning platform. The organization and ease of navigation is something we are excited to share. Future improvements and updates to this format will include more translations of the Wooden Dummy applications and bonus elements from our current online Trapping; and future Chi Sao Specialized Certification Programs.
