The task of positively identify discipline isn’t easy because it changes clothes more times than an actor in a theater play. Discipline shape shifts itself based on age, position, up-bringing, situation, and especially perception, which makes it extremely hard to define. As we hunt for its meaning, we will find that discipline is unique to each individual. Acknowledging this takes the pressure off our shoulders and helps us shift our focus to perceiving it as a multi-layered guide in a general direction, versus the and all, be all truth.
“Knowin the truth, seein the truth, and tellin the truth, are all different experiences.” Matthew McConaughey
Defining anything builds our awareness of it and often enlightens us on a better path. In the case of discipline, we can find various types that many of us have experienced throughout our lives. These include Remedial Discipline, Preventative Discipline, and Self-Discipline. If we reflect on our past and especially our childhood, we can see the residue of these three common types of discipline in every action we take. Understanding this means that we can take advantage of playing all three and leverage better odds against the “house” to win.
Finding the way to our goals could be as easy as looking at the unconscious disciplines we are already executing each day. The power in everyday actions like brushing our teeth gives us the ability to achieve anything we want.
